All-risk or TPL: how to choose your car insurance
The most common question at renewal: pay for all-risk or keep third-party only? It depends on the value of the car and on whether you could absorb losing it.
Compare car insurance prices nowThe simple rule
Below roughly 8,000 USD of value, the all-risk premium plus the excess gets close to the loss it protects you from: third-party is often the better choice. Above 12,000 USD, all-risk is worth it, especially for a new or financed car.
What you lose with third-party only
The repair of your own car after an at-fault accident, theft, fire and natural perils. If the other driver is at fault and insured you can claim from their insurer, but it takes longer.
What raises an all-risk premium
Value, year, agency repair, new-for-old spare parts, a lower excess, and with some insurers luxury or electric cars.
The in-between plans
Collision covers only the collision of your own car for a lower premium. Total Loss covers only total loss or total theft, protection against the catastrophe at the lowest cost.

Yes, renewal is the moment to change level and insurer. Compare a month before expiry.
Does the all-risk premium fall as the car ages?
