First, second, third class and network: what they change in your health policy
After age, class and network are the two factors that move the premium most. Understanding them saves money without giving up what you actually need.
Compare health insurance prices nowThe classes
First class (A): private room and, with some insurers, the highest limits. Second class (B): double room, premium a quarter to a third lower. Third class (SP or C): shared room, the cheapest, sometimes with reduced limits. Some insurers offer a Lux class for luxury rooms.
The networks
The full network includes every hospital, AUBMC and Hôtel-Dieu (CMC) included. The restricted network excludes those two and sometimes others (Bellevue, Saint George, Rizk, Saint John, KMC) for a clearly lower premium.
Outside the network, reimbursement is usually 80% to 85% at the insurer's tariff; emergencies are covered 100% in any hospital.
How to choose
If your usual hospital is inside the restricted network, the saving is real. If you want AUBMC and Hôtel-Dieu, stay on the full network. The calculator shows the network of each plan and its benefit card.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change class at renewal?
Yes; moving up may require a medical assessment, moving down is always possible.
Does a restricted network mean lower quality care?
No, only a shorter list of hospitals. The hospitals included also receive first-class policies.
